What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is similar to a house address for a device on a network (or the internet). It is used to ensure messages arrive at the correct device on the network.

The two main types of IP addresses are: IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.0.1) and IPv6 (e.g. 2101:7b08:2cdb::742a:5081:885f). The latter, IPv6 was introduced to keep up with the number of devices connected to the internet. It's estimated that there are around 20 billion devices connected to the internet, whereas there are only about 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses available. IPv6 supports about 340 undecillion addresses (a very large number), essentially making sure that we never run out of addresses to use!
